NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS!

I’m pleased to report that I’m currently tracking a new album in the cozy digs of Halfling Studio in NW Portland. This wondrous space(ship) is stacked with some of the best equipment and acoustics in Portland. And I also have the superb engineering talents of Adams Lee (Stephen Malkmus, The Decemberists, Built To Spill) working the nobs and wires, and even laying down some (blistering!) guitars. I’m expecting good things to come of the project. Stay tuned…

my latest track, maybe, further explores more cinematic songwriting and production, albeit within the bounds of my rather limited resources (…”limited within bounds” — it seems i can’t escape such imprisonment at every turn!) / hopefully some day i can record these tracks proper (Dark Matter, Open Water, Prison Paradise, Maybe, and the one that’s likely up next: Keyless) with quality gear and real strings / maybe. some day / that said, i’m very happy with how this track came together / i’ve been struggling with the subject matter for over two years now, which is ridiculous — it needs to be buried / hopefully getting this out there will do the trick…although perhaps i should have sent this letter instead_

i just published a new song, “prison paradise,” as well as its accompanying video // this song just fell out into the air with very little coaxing / i felt i was able to capture what i’m feeling quite well in words, music, and even in video (not my strong suit) // i’ve been struggling lately, trying to find solid ground in a desolate, rather muted existence over the past few months — all the while, being set among a place of such beauty and happiness: my home in portland, oregon // alas, i’m captive to unforgiving forces of unemployment, interpersonal unresponsiveness, boredom, and (i’m reluctant to admit) loneliness // it’s quite a juxtaposition! thankfully, i have my guitar and modest technology for document // i hope you enjoy!

i just finished a new demo track, “open water” / i’ve been deep in the writing and recording mood again lately, especially with my newly found, albeit uninvited unemployment / but the rains are here in portland with command, the leaves are falling, and i’ve got plenty of wine on hand / so be it! time to write and record some new music and let this inner anxiety fall out among this season of detritus // “open water” is a little different for me, as it is restrained with no unsuspecting chords or key changes / instead i explored a linear songwriting technique with no real verse or chorus, so there is no repeat in the tune / plus i gave some self-to-self vocal harmonies a go for the first time / i’m pretty happy with the final result and like all these “demos” i put up here, perhaps someday it’ll have a chance to be properly recorded in a professional studio / but for now, it’s a simple reflection of my home “studio” with all the character of a cheap microphone and the NW portland streets below // enjoy!
